The Modern Merchant Podcast [EP 11]: Special Guest, SkuVault

In today’s episode, Travis and Austin chat with Kim Wren from SkuVault about Warehouse Management Systems, Inventory Management Systems, and recent e-commerce trends.

Austin Rose:

All right. Hi, everyone. Thanks for jumping on. This is your host Austin with The Modern Merchant Podcast. Got a really fun episode. With me, as always, we have Travis, CEO of Flxpoint, and our special guest today is Kim from SkuVault. She’s the senior director of business development. Kim, thanks for jumping on today. Appreciate it.

Kim Wren:

Hey, thanks for having me. I appreciate being on here and talking to you all about our business.

Austin Rose:

Yeah, absolutely. And we’ve been working with SkuVault for a while now, and there’s a handful of mutual clients between Flxpoint and SkuVault. Can you give us a really quick overview of SkuVault?

Kim Wren:

Sure. I’m the senior director of business development, responsible for bringing in leads and sales, specifically within the partnership program. It’s my role to seek out new partners who align well with what we’re doing.

Austin Rose:

That’s awesome. One topic I wanted to hit on today is the difference between a warehouse management system and an inventory management system. Can you explain?

Kim Wren:

Absolutely. In our early days, we called ourselves an inventory management system, but we’ve always leaned more towards a warehouse management system (WMS). A WMS starts in the warehouse, helping manage stock, route workers, and ensure everything is organized.

Austin Rose:

Got it. You mentioned using barcode scanning for quality control. How does that tie into performance?

Kim Wren:

Using barcode scanning ensures that clients stay compliant with seller performance standards. If their performance drops, they can face penalties, so it’s crucial to get the right product to the right person.

Travis Mariea:

And where do you see SkuVault fitting into the broader tech stack in e-commerce?

Kim Wren:

We fit towards the end of the tech stack. Most clients might look for a website or basic order management first before thinking about optimizing their warehouse operations.

Austin Rose:

One of the common reasons clients move from spreadsheets to a system like yours?

Kim Wren:

Organization is key. You need to know what products you have and where they are. SkuVault allows clients to set up locations within their warehouses, helping them manage inventory effectively.

Kim Wren:

We provide workflows that work for both small and enterprise clients. Our price points allow small businesses to start organized, as early as $299 a month.

Austin Rose:

What’s the existing customer breakdown? It seems like direct-to-consumer and 3PLs are growing.

Kim Wren:

Currently, about 50% of our customers are resellers. We’ve noticed significant growth among our 3PL clients recently.

Travis Mariea:

What’s coming up for SkuVault in the future?

Kim Wren:

We have a lot planned. We’ve been growing, adding more integrations and features. We’re also revamping our dashboard with better data insights.

Kim Wren:

We want to ensure we’re listening to our clients' needs and adjusting our offerings accordingly.
